Crocheted hats and jewelry

Owner-designer Johanna Hofring's hemp jersey dresses

Ekovaruhuset appears, at first glance, not unlike any of the many shops popping up on the Lower East Side: stark white walls, wood floors, sparsely merchandised. But this quaint, miniature storefront, with its quirky disco ball and shadow-box-turned-jewelry-display-cases, is on a mission to reshape the way its customers view their role as consumers of fashion. A designer herself, Swedish proprietress Johanna Hofring has made it her goal to sell wares that are not only organic and eco-friendly, but are also produced in decent working environments for fair wages.

Stocking items from all over the world—including her own line of dyed dresses with delicate, crocheted trim, as well as well-known green labels like Three As Four and Misericordia—this stand-out eco-boutique proves you don't have to swap conscientiousness for great style.
